So there’s a new AI agent called Hermes — named after the Greek messenger god.
Great name. But if you’re going to localize it for Chinese users, I have a suggestion:
Call it 太白金星 (Tài Bái Jīn Xīng).
Here’s why.
—
First, a fun fact.
太白金星 literally means “the Golden Star of Great White” — and that star is Venus. Yes, the same Venus the West named after the goddess of love and beauty.
In the West, Venus is Aphrodite. She spends her days on Mount Olympus being gorgeous, starting wars over golden apples, and making gods fall in love with mortals.
In China, that same bright star became 太白金星 — a cheerful old celestial official with white eyebrows, cloud-walking shoes, and a permanent to-do list from the Jade Emperor.
Same star. Completely different assignment.
While Venus was busy being beautiful, 太白金星 was busy getting things done.
—
In Chinese mythology, 太白金星 is the personal envoy of the Jade Emperor — basically the CEO of the universe. His entire job is to receive commands, descend to the mortal world, navigate complex situations, negotiate, execute — and report back with results.
You probably know him from Journey to the West: the cheerful old man who keeps showing up to smooth things over between the Jade Emperor and Sun Wukong. Diplomatic, quick-witted, always smiling. Nobody gets mad at him because he just gets things done.
Sound familiar?
—
Now let’s compare:
Hermes: winged sandals, travels between Olympus, Earth, and the Underworld, delivers Zeus’s commands, master of communication.
太白金星: cloud shoes, travels between Heaven and the mortal world, delivers the Jade Emperor’s commands, master of diplomacy and execution.
Hermes: charming, silver-tongued, gets along with everyone.
太白金星: charming, silver-tongued, gets along with everyone.
Hermes: not the most powerful god, but arguably the most useful one.
太白金星: not the highest-ranking deity, but the one the Jade Emperor trusts to actually get things done.
The only real difference? Hermes has winged sandals. 太白金星 has cloud-walking shoes.
One was born a god. The other earned the job.
But functionally? They’re the same guy. Just born in different mythologies.
—
Now here’s the real question:
Isn’t 太白金星 actually a better metaphor for what an AI agent does?
Hermes delivers messages. That’s a chatbot.
太白金星 receives your command, goes out into the world, navigates complex situations, negotiates, executes — and comes back with results.
That’s an agent.
You don’t send Hermes to do a task. You send 太白金星.
—
And here’s the cosmic irony:
In the West, Venus is the star of love and beauty — soft, passive, adored.
In China, that same star became the hardest-working errand runner in all of Heaven.
Maybe that’s the real difference between a messenger and an agent.
One shines. The other delivers.
—
So if Hermes Agent ever drops a Chinese version, I’m petitioning for the name:
太白金星 Agent
It writes itself. 🪄
