Right, so I’m putting this down because, quite frankly, I’m at my wit’s end. Feels like I’m teetering on the bloody brink of a financial implosion, staring into a proper black hole. ‘Panic’ doesn’t even begin to cover the gut-wrenching dread that’s become my shadow. Thirty-eight, and I feel about eighty.

It’s not even about me, not really. It’s the thought of dragging down the people I love, the ones I’ve tried to shield. Their trust, their faith – watching it all crumble into disappointment, seeing the burden of my monumental cock-ups land squarely on their shoulders… that’s the real torment. What a bloody mess I’ve made. The sheer unknown of what trouble I might unwittingly land them in, it’s a suffocating blanket.

Sleep? Don’t make me laugh. It’s a foreign concept, a luxury for people who aren’t perpetually running on fumes. Every night, I wrestle with it, staring at the ceiling, watching the clock tick past 3, 4, 5 AM, until I’m absolutely knackered and my body just gives up. Because the moment I close my eyes, time speeds up, doesn’t it? Tomorrow, that bloody dreaded tomorrow, rushes in, and with it, the ever-shrinking sliver of time I have left before the whole bloody house of cards comes tumbling down. My time, it’s well and truly on the clock.

It all started with what I, in my boundless naivety – or perhaps just plain foolishness – saw as a golden ticket: chucking a hundred grand at a car modification garage for a ten percent stake. God, I was so keen to prove myself, to finally build something. Then, like a siren call, came the ‘opportunity’ to become the main man. Another chap wanted out, and they all came knocking. I went cap in hand to my old man, borrowed another three hundred thousand quid, convinced this was my moment to shine. What a mug. Turns out, it was a proper stitch-up, a perfectly laid trap from the off.

Those financial reports, the rosy projections – all a load of old cobblers, weren’t they? The company was already up to its eyeballs in hidden debts. And just like that, I was plunged headfirst into a never-ending cycle of trying to keep the wolves from the door. The rent alone was absolutely eye-watering, over three hundred thousand a year. To keep the lights on, to keep the dream (or what was left of that sorry excuse for a dream) on life support, I went back to the well, hundreds of thousands more from the family. Then, when things got really desperate, I scraped the barrel, turning to dodgy high-interest lenders, online loans, even using my motor as collateral. Every single penny, gone, vanished into thin air, like throwing good money after bad. A complete dog’s dinner, it was.

And to top it all off, we even had staff doing a runner, seemingly all part of the grand plan. I’m absolutely convinced I was meticulously targeted, played for a fool, a bloody mug, a mere stepping stone for some other chap to get himself off the hook.

I’d love to give him a proper good hiding, the absolute snake who cooked up this nightmare. But what’s the point? He’s done a bunk, and even if I tracked him down, he’d never, ever take responsibility. The rage just simmers, a bitter, impotent fire deep inside.

Dignity? Ha! That’s a word from another lifetime, isn’t it? It evaporated the moment I shuffled into those dodgy loan offices, signing away my future, my self-respect, piece by painful piece. It was utterly shredded with every single lie I spun to my family, every desperate attempt to pull the wool over their eyes. My pride, my standing – well, that’s long gone, down the drain with everything else.

Who do you even talk to about this sort of thing? Is there anyone out there who could truly get it? The sheer weight of it all is absolutely crushing. And the cruellest kick in the teeth? These problems, these relentless pressures, they don’t give a damn about my pain. They just keep coming, a relentless tide threatening to drag me under for good, no quarter given.
